The minimum wage rose in 2026. This increase aims to improve living standards for low-income workers, but it also brings challenges for employers who must adjust to higher labor costs.

What Is the 2026 Minimum Wage Increase in Washington state?

The minimum wage increase took effect on January 1, 2026 in Washington state, raising the hourly pay floor for workers in many sectors to $17.13 per hour (up from $16.66 per hour in 2025). Areas throughout Washington state have higher hourly rates, such as Seattle, with an increase from $20.76 in 2025 to $21.30.

Workers who are 14 or 15 years old may be paid 85% of the adult minimum wage, which is $14.56 per hour. Again, certain areas in Washington state may have higher amounts.

This increase reflects ongoing efforts to address income inequality and the rising cost of living. For workers earning the minimum wage, this change means more money in their pockets, which can improve their ability to cover basic expenses like housing, food, and transportation.
